Winter, such as it was, will soon be winding down. Vermonters all around the state, are preparing for the annual sport of maple sugaring. As a transplanted Vermonter, I’ve learned what every Vermonter knows – warm days and cold nights make the sap flow.

The process of making maple syrup is relatively simple. The sap is collected and water is boiled out of it. The work is hard, slogging through the snow to collect sap. These days, the picturesque buckets hanging on trees have mostly been replaced with a system of tubing that transports the sap to large containers. At the start of the season, there is usually thick snow on the ground. The snow gradually turns to mud so deep that it just might swallow a person whole.

All this effort for the liquid gold called Vermont Maple Syrup. Last year, a friend invited me to a little gathering to share his maple syrup harvest. We sat around with a small group of his friends, in the house that he and his father had built, eating exquisite warm maple syrup on snow (sugar on snow) and eating big dill pickles. Heaven. This is why I moved to Vermont.

art quilt : Bartonsville covered bridge Vermont

the Bartonsville covered bridge met it's demise during hurricane Irene this summer. You may have seen the picture on the news of this wonderful old covered bridge being swept away by the river. There is a picture included of the site after the bridge with nothing there. so sad but yet amazing. The bridge stood strong since 1805 and the date is stitched on the sign over the mouth of the bridge. The piece is 11" long and 16.5" wide and has triangles on the back for hanging with a dowel . It is going to be at the Chandler holiday bazaar in Randolph for purchase starting in late November. Feel free to email me with details on this one or I could make another:-) for you.
I would need at least a week to make it but it could be to your specs, I can't make anything exactly the same of course.

Leather Wrap Fire Agate Dragonfly Chan Luu style cuff- 5 wrap

This Chan Luu style Leather wrap is made with semi precious Fire Agate 8mm beads and cream colored glass beads all carefully strung around a high quality natural antique brown American leather cord using a forest green super strong thread. It is 38 inches in length plus the closures, it will fit anyone with a 6.0 wrist to a 7.5 wrist ( wraps 6 times on a 6.0 wrist). It has an adjustable dragonfly closure and silver button with four different loops, you simply find you size and trim the excess leather. Organic Vermont Maple Roller Play Dough

We selectively harvested maple saplings from crowded forest areas and peeled the bark to reveal a beautiful light honey colored wood.

Next we cut the pieces to six inch lengths and hand sanded each piece smooth. Finally, a coat of our homemade beeswax finish was applied.

White Chili with Cornbread

White Chili with Cornbread:

So the weather this week has been atrocious here....rain,

flooding, the first trees are turning,
fall is in the air,.....all around yucky.

We're all ready for better days.

But until that happens, comfort food is the only way to get through this shizzle! This dish not only satisfies that need, it would also be a great addition to your Super Bowl party. I think you could even make the chili and the cornbread in separate dishes and they'd be equally delicious. However, this way you have one less pan to wash. Bonus.

The chili recipe has two secret ingredients that really makes it special.....a can of white beans that you puree to give it this incredibly smooth texture and the addition of a small bit of cream cheese at the end for a little zing and richness. As I said, this would be good all on it's own served with the usual Mexican condiments.....tortilla chips, grated cheese, extra cilantro, scallions, etc.

And if you already have a favorite cornbread recipe go ahead and use that as the topping.

Whatever floats your boat, I say.Here's the recipe:

White Chili with Cornbread

Chili:
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, peeled and chopped, about 3 1/4 cups chopped onion
1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped into 1/2" to 3/4" pieces; about 1 1/2 cups chopped pepper
1 small jalapeño pepper, diced; remove and discard seeds for milder chili
1 to 4 cloves garlic (to taste), peeled and minced
1 pound bag frozen corn, thawed; or 3 cups fresh or frozen/thawed corn kernels
2 cans (4 1/2 ounces each) chopped green chiles, undrained
5 1/2 cups chopped cooked chicken or turkey meat, white and/or dark
1 can (15 to 19 ounces) white beans or cannellini beans, undrained
1 tablespoon ground cumin, or to taste
3/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
3-ounce package cream cheese
1 to 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese, optional, for topping

Cornbread topping:
1 3/4 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1 cup yellow cornmeal
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 1/2-ounce can chopped mild green chiles, drained
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro, optional
1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled
1 large egg

Directions:
1) To make the chili: Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion, peppers, and garlic, frying until the vegetables are soft and the onions are barely beginning to turn golden, about 10 to 15 minutes.

2) Add the corn, chiles, and chicken or turkey, stirring to combine.

4) Place the beans with their liquid in a food processor or blender, and process until smooth. Add to the pan with the meat and vegetables, stirring to combine.

4) Stir in the cumin and salt.

5) Simmer the chili slowly for 30 minutes, stirring frequently. While the chili simmers, make the cornbread topping, and start preheating the oven to 375°F.

6) In a medium bowl, whisk together the flours, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, chiles, and fresh cilantro.

7) In another bowl or large measuring cup, whisk together the milk, melted butter, and egg.

8) Pour the liquid all at once into the flour mixture, stirring quickly and gently until just combined. Set the batter aside while you finish the chili.

9) Add the cream cheese to the chili, stirring until it melts. Adjust the salt, if necessary.

10) Spoon the chili into a lightly greased 9" x 13" x 2"-deep pan. You'll need about 1" clearance between the chili and the top of the pan, to ensure the cornbread topping doesn't overflow. If your pan is shallower than 2", fill with chili until it comes no closer than 1" to the top. You may also divide the chili among individual serving dishes. The entire recipe makes about 8 cups of chili; if you use 2-cup capacity ramekins or bakers, spoon 1 cup chili into each.

11) Top the chili with grated cheddar cheese, if desired; then with the cornbread batter. For 8 individual ramekins or bakers, use 1/2 cup batter for each.

12) Bake the chili and cornbread for about 25 minutes, until the top is set and a toothpick inserted into the cornbread comes out clean. The individual servings will bake for about 20 minutes.

13) Remove from the oven, and serve hot or warm.

Yield: about 8 to 12 servings.

Farm Fresh Rustic Lavender Calendula Soap by oldgatesfarm

I start this cold-processed soap with an infusion of lavender and homegrown calendula. Farm fresh.
This is an old-fashioned, cold-processed soap made in small 3 lb batches...I start with simple pure ingredients like olive oil and organic beeswax. It cures for at least 4 weeks, but upwards of several months.

Fun Long Dangle Squirrel-Chewed Earrings by HickorySquirrel

This is a very special pair of Squirrel "Carved" earrings. Each earring has two unique squirrel designed nut shells, and the earring also features a brass Squirrel charm. Above each Hickory nut rests colorful glass beads in Purple, Blue and Green. Earrings are wrapped in pure copper wire.

This 20" X 23" wallhanging has a hot air ballon flying over Camel's Hump in Vermont. The colorful quilt has tabs on the top for hanging. I am not fond of heights, but going up in a hot air ballon on a beautiful summer day is on my bucket list.

A scientist (geo-nerd) by nature, I love the evolution from fabric and/or animal fiber to finished product. I am constantly amazed at how many paths there are to completion. Cozy Noggin will appeal to people who love to give unique, quirky and fun gifts to the wonderful people in their life. It is my intention that you can find something for just about anyone you are looking for, whether it be an expectant mom, your honey bunny, an excellent host/hostess, or maybe, just maybe, you!

This cloud is a vintage fabric pillow with a funky purple & orange floral. One spring blend zebra and two classic white birdies are suspended from the cloud. The contrast of the colors & white is perfect to catch baby's attention, while the zebra-bird stripes add a fun element. Each bird has sparkely gold glass bead eyes and is securely attached to the cloud with monofilament. To hang, simply adjust the cloud's pink ribbon to the desired height and re-tie the bow.

Cloud Mobiles make excellent baby shower gifts and are also at home in offices, kitchen windows and classrooms. I envision this mobile in a baby girl or boy's airy, earthy nursery, adding a bright pop of color.

By A Thread is a home of quilted purses, bags, eyeglass cases and other quilted items made out of beautiful fabrics. Each item is designed, sewn and free motion quilted in a smoke-free, pet-friendly studio. Free-motion quilting is basically drawing with thread, using a sewing machine. By A Thread’s creator likes to experiment with various free-motion designs so something new is something expected from this shop.

By A Thread’s inspiration for this art form came soon after moving to Vermont, and meeting her friend Karen. Karen was a quilter. Karen was exuberant and generous in sharing her expertise. She was making art quilts. Upon meeting her she was working on a beautiful, soulful piece depicting a bayou in her native Louisiana. By A Thread’s creator was hooked. She had been sewing for a long time and had always had an interest in quilting. There were magazines with pictures of amazing creations from intricate traditional bed quilts to abstract journal quilts. The quilts were gorgeous. The breadth of fabrics available was truly astonishing. She began collecting my own stash of gorgeous fabrics and was hooked on this new art form.

"I had ambitions to make art quilts of my own, but constantly found myself drawn to more practical items. I made baby quilts for the children of friends. I made artistic pot holders. I made pillows with nature scenes. I came to love the texture of quilted fabric and the beautiful, useful things that could be made with it. I discovered that I liked to experiment with free-motion quilting, which is using a sewing machine to draw with thread on quilted fabric.

Somewhere along the way, I needed a small purse. Long ago, I’d given up carrying the monstrous handbags that seemed to grow bigger every year with the junk I’d stuffed into them. I didn’t want to go back to a big bag, so I made myself a little purse I could wear across my chest. I loved it and so did my friends and co-workers. I began selling a few purses at Christmas and soon found myself fantasizing about a life making beautiful, useful things. This web site is another step on the path of making that fantasy a reality. Friday Finds - Birds of Winter

Living in Vermont, sometimes in the middle of winter, when you are outside, it is completely quiet. And you think all of the birds must be gone for the season. And then you get a warmer day, like we had today, and suddenly all of these birds are out and and about and making beautiful sounds! I've enjoyed seeing and hearing the birds the past few days, so I decided to find some bird-themed items.

This lovely bird is part of a set of Springtime Handmade Square Envelopes from Upcycle, Recycle, Reuse. They are upcycled from magazines. They are so pretty, you could put something plain, like a gift card, in them and really liven it up!

Sweet Avenue Jewelry has a stunning vintage inspired Soaring Bird pendant. The chain is included, so you'll be ready to soar as soon as you receive it.

Friday Finds: Cabin Fever!

Well we are getting on in the winter months and as beautiful as it has been, those brown snow days have begun to appear. While great because they are a reminder of the Spring that's to come, people and pets are seeming to get a bit of that "Cabin Fever Crabbiness". Being that we are true pros at dealing with this in Vermont, I thought I would collect some of the handmade creations that can keep us busy in the coziness of our homes until they Spring finally arrives.

My first find is for an original knitting pattern by The Spun Monkey Fiber Shoppe
